Julia Weiss, medical student at the Medical University of Graz (Austria), recently returned from a 4-week Max Kade Clinical Clerkship in New York City. Julia studied Urology at Weill Cornell Medicine/New York Presbyterian Hospital and shared her daily routine with us:

“My day at NYP Manhattan started at 6 a.m. with rounds. During my Sub-I, I rotated to three different locations of New York Presbyterian. At NYP Queens and NYP Brooklyn my day started at 6:30 a.m. I usually joined the resident on call for rounds. On Mondays we additionally had grand rounds with the attendings and the department chair. At grand rounds, there were always talks, like Sub-I talks, Oncology boards, etc. I also had the opportunity to join in the OR for surgeries or go to cystoscopy cases. I felt part of the team from day one. During surgery, the attendings and residents taught me and answered all my questions. There was the chance to spend some time in pediatric urology as well, which was a nice experience. Furthermore, I was able to join some attendings in the clinic. This was great, because in clinic I was able to interact with patients, take their past medical history, then present it to the attending and be a part of the diagnostic and treatment planning. My day at the hospital usually ended around 6 to 7 p.m.”

Julia is in her last year of studying medicine in Graz. On her experience during the clerkship in the US, Julia concludes: “Spending time in New York City as an international student has provided me with amazing learning opportunities as well as the chance of connecting with people on a professional and personal basis.”
